Brandur and the Faroe Islands
Eleven years ago I met Brandur from the Faroe Islands. I for one had never heard of the Faroe Islands ever before. It turned out to be this small accumultion of 18 islands in the north atlantic, between Iceland and Scandinavia.
Brandur is one of a kind. His positive way to see the world and people around him, with this huge curiosity, genuine warmth, and almost naive kindness, made me want to know more about those islands he came from. I started to build a picture in my mind of this genuine, simple, untroubled, raw and beautiful place.
We became very good friends over the years, and last year I finally got to visit his family and their mystic islands…. With only 50 000 inhabitants, I compared it to a small town being an entire country. One day we visited a record store that only sold music from local musicians… You can even find Brandurs music on those shelves, listen here.
I was amazed by the great range of culture and talent from this little country.
He wanted to show me everything, and while I kept shooting photographs of everything, he kept talking about everything, six days straight….
While we traveled from Island to island, his brother Trondur and his girlfriend Liv joined us on one roadtrip, which was a perfect opportunity for a couples shoot.
The night before my flight home, we left on a sailboat together with Brandurs cusin Havardur, headed for the airport.
What a magical morning.
I am very greatful to have gotten so warmly invited into his parents and his brothers and Livs home.
Go explore the Faroe Islands folks!
